As it occurs in nature, Cordyceps is a rare find. It is a parasitic fungus, meaning that it needs a living host from which to grow, which will eventually be killed by the fungus. The host is typically an insect or, tree, or even another fungus, but most notably, a specific type of caterpillar that exists only in the high mountains of China. When harvested from the wild, it is very expensive, sometimes costing thousands of dollars per kilo. Fortunately, modern science allows us to replicate the mycelium and the fruiting body of Cordyceps sinensis in the laboratory using a variety of media, which may include insect larvae and various cereal grain-based substrates. Ours is certified organic; produced in the USA for maximum potency and purity. We utilize a traditional, multi-stage extraction process, buy which the mushrooms are first extracted in hot water, and then again in alcohol, which is then evaporated off and replaced with sweet-tasting vegetable glycerin.
